Originally from Calgary, Alberta, I grew up on the cold, windswept Prairies of western Canada. Following dreams of an academic career, I earned a Ph.D. in the history of science, medicine, and technology from the Johns Hopkins University, then worked as a professor at Michigan State University for fifteen years. Finally ready to try something new, I persuaded my amazing husband to move to Vancouver Island, where we now live.

When I’m not writing, I play the viola in the Civic Orchestra of Victoria, walk our dogs along the seashore, and slay fearsome monsters in Dungeons & Dragons.
